La historia arranca en 1910 cuando Montecarlo decide organizar algún evento para rivalizar con el carnaval de Niza, y atraer visitantes a la ciudad. Se decide organizar un rally automovilístico y se elige el mes de Enero para demostrar su clima suave en esas fechas.
En la primera edición (1911) participaron 23 equipos y en el año siguiente esa cifra se cuadruplicó, pero debido a un reglamento complicado que causo gran controversia, la “Societé des Bains de Mer”, patrocinador del evento, debido a la mala publicidad, decidió no aportar mas dinero y la prueba no se celebro el año siguiente
Tras la 1ª Guerra Mundial, ya en 1923, la idea del rally renace, quizás influenciada por la creación el año anterior de la carrera Paris-Niza, organizada por el Automóvil Club de Niza, y que logra atención por parte de la prensa .La tercera edición se celebra en el 1924, con un reglamento mas sencillo y preciso e incluye un recorrido común de regularidad, la prueba a partir de este año se llama “Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo”.
El rally se celebra sin interrupción hasta 1939 y se reanuda en 1949 tras la guerra, hasta la fecha solo se ha interrumpido en dos ocasiones, en 1957 y en 1974, debido a crisis del petróleo.

It´its history starts of in 1910 when Monte-Carlo decides to organize an event to compete with the carnival of Nice, and in order to attract visitors the city. Therefore it was decided to organize an auto rally and the month of January was chosen due to its mild climate.
In its first edition (1911) 23 teams participated and in the following year´s edition the number was quadruplicated ( multiplied by four), but due to a complicated regulation that caused great controversy. Due to the bad publicity gotten the official sponsor of the event, the "Societé DES Bains de Mer", decided not to contribute any more funds. So the event did not take place on its third edition.
After first World war, as early as in 1923, the idea of a rally reappears, perhaps influenced by the creation the previous year of the Paris-Nice race, organized by the Automobile Club of Nize, and which obtains attention by a part of the press. The third edition is celebrated in 1924 with a simple and precise regulation however including a common route of regularity. The race as of this year on is renamed as “The Rally Automobile Monte-Carlo".
The Rally takes place without interruption until 1939 and it is restarted again after the war in 1949. Up to date it has only has been interrupted in two occasions, in 1957 and in 1974, due to the Oil crisis.
